ITINERARY

Visit to Palau Ton Tone Island to do birds watching. Overnight Kawthaung.

Drive to 57 Miles Camp. Overnight 57 Miles Camp.

Woodpecker and other birds survey around 57 Miles Camp. Overnight 57 Miles Camp.

SURVEY SITE

Tanintharyi is the southern most part of Myanmar and it is situated in the Thai Peninsula. The area which we concentrated our woodpecker and other birds survey, is in Kawthaung region, the southern most portion of Tanintharyi. The Pakchan River forms a border between neighboring Thailand and Myanmar in Kawthaung region.
We visited one day at Palau Ton Tone Island that is situated 6 km away from Kawthaung Town and at N 10 ˚ 01’ 20.6’’ and E 98 ˚ 30’ 22.7’’. There is a huge human settlement and many people from Kawthaung are picnic on the island. The island is mainly covered by cashew nut, beetle nut and coconut plantations.

Woodpecker and other birds survey were mainly conducted at N 10 ˚ 34’ 00.4’’ and E 98 ˚ 33’ 35.1’’. This site is named 57 miles camp which is covered by primary and secondary evergreen forests. At birds survey site we put out three straight transect routes. The distance is 2.2 km each. Each day, the woodpecker and other birds survey team divided into three groups for carry out the detail research at three different transects.

During the raining season survey, despite the bad weather, a total of 199 bird species include 13 species of Woodpecker were recorded.
