Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) River is one of two major rivers and largest river in Myanmar. This section of the river has extensive broad sand-bars and some muddy edges. Some area of the banks are covered by thin thorny scrub. Only 101 bird species have been recorded, but it is believed that others are yet to be discovered. The highlight species are the White-tailed Stonechat, Long-billed Pipit, Sand Lark, Ruddy Shelduck, Spot-billed Duck, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Great Cormorant, River Lapwing, Great Thick-knee, rare Indian Skimmer, Small Pratincole, Pied Kingfisher, Grey Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Spotted Redshank, River Tern, Black-bellied Tern, rare Greater Spotted Eagle, Harriers, thousands of Sand Martin and Plain Martin.
The best time to bird watching is during November to April.
