BAGAN REGION
Bagan & Ayeyarwaddy River
 
 

Bagan is situatJerdon's Miniveted on the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River, Central Myanmar Dry Zone and is semi-desert with scrub and scattered trees. In this site only 138 bird species have been recorded, but it is believed that others are yet to be discovered. This site is an excellent place for bird watching in Myanmar. The highlight species are the rare Hooded Treepie, White-throated Babbler, rare Jerdon's Minivet (now split from White-bellied Minivet) and Burmese Bushlark which are Myanmar endemic species, Rain Quail, Barred Buttonquail, Laggar Falcon, Common Hoopoe, Chestnut-headed Bee-eater, Spotted Owlet, Indian Nightjar, Burmese Shrike, Vinous-breasted Starling, Streak-eared Bulbul, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Brown Prinia and Plain-backed Sparrow may be observed. Numerous other species can also be observed in this area.
Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) River is one of two major rivers and largest river in Myanmar. This section of the river has extensive broad sand-bars and some muddy edges. Some area of the banks are covered by thin thorny scrub. Only 101 bird species have been recorded, but it is believed that others are yet to be discovered. The highlight species are the White-tailed Stonechat, Long-billed Pipit, Sand Lark, Ruddy Shelduck, Spot-billed Duck, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Great Cormorant, River Lapwing, Great Thick-knee, rare Indian Skimmer, Small Pratincole, Pied Kingfisher, Grey Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Spotted Redshank, River and Black-bellied Terns, rare Greater Spotted Eagle, Harriers, thousands of Sand and Plain Martins.
Bagan is also Myanmar most important archeology zone and is one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia. The city of Bagan covers an area of 42 sq km. There, one can fine over 2,000 pagodas and temples built during the Bagan Dynasty founded by King Anawrahta in 1044 A.D.
In addition, butterfly watching may offer many good sightings.
