CHATTHIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The Largest remaining population of World's Endangered Deer (cervus aldi thamin)

 

White-bellied WoodpeckerChatthin is situated in Central Myanmar Dry Zone, the area of 269.36 sq. km covered with grass savanna, dry deciduous and mixed deciduous forests. This area is particularly interesting for the general wildlife lover and is ideal for birds and mammals, especially Myanmar endemic birds and rare Brow - antlered Deer watching. It is a fantastic opportunity to see and photograph these animals.
Chatthin is home for 223 bird species. The highlights to be seen include two rare Myanmar endemic species- Hooded Treepie and Jerdon's Minivet. In addition one may be presented with a range of other Myanmar endemics Burmese Bushlark and White-throated Babbler. Other resident species of forest and water birds one may view include 14 species of Woodpecker, Orange-breasted Green Pigeon, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, 5 species of Parakeet such as Alexandrine Parakeet, Red-breasted Parakeet, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Blossom-headed Parakeet and Grey-headed Parakeet, Brown Hawk Owl, Large-tailed Nightjar, Savanna Nightjar, Rufous-winged Buzzard, White-eyed Buzzard, White-rumped Falcon, Black-collared Starling, Indochinese Cuckooshrike, Olive Bulbul, Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch, Asian Paradise-flycatcher, White-tailed Robin, Woolly-necked Stork, Comb Duck, Red-wattled Lapwing and Oriental Darter.
Butterfly watching is an additional activity for this area as are the observation of orchid and other exotic plants.
The best time to visit is from November to April but the time for Brow - antlered Deer watching is all the year round..
