AYTHAYA Wine is Myanmar Wine:
The wine comes from the town of AYTHAYA in the Shan States, and is made by the Myanmar Vineyard Management Co., Ltd.
AYTHAYA Wine is a newly emerging Asian wine brand on its way to international recognition.
AYTHAYA is the first grape wine grown in Myanmar, formerly called Burma. The wine is made from European vines which grow extremely well in the moderate, high altitude climate of the Shan States.
|
The VISION:
From the outset in 1997, the goal was always to produce fine wines from select European grape varieties at the most suitable locations in Southeast Asia. We believe AYTHAYA wine will one day rival the top wines from classic wine-producing countries. |
The PRODUCT:
Our 2004 " AYTHAYA RED " is made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz ( Syrah ) vines imported from France in 1999.
A fruity red Moscato grape from Italy is the main variety for our " AYTHAYA ROSE " and The famous Sauvignon Blanc from he Bordeaux area forms the core of our " AYTHAYA WHITE ". Soon there will be Dornfelder from Germany, Tempranillo from Spain, as well as Simillion and Chenin Blanc grapes from France. |
The LOCATION:
Aythaya Wines are grown at an altitude of 1,300 meters, near the village of Aythaya on the slopes of the Taunggyi mountains.
Geologically, the hilly slopes of the Shan States are the Southern extension of the Himalayan Mountains. The dominating soil is based on limestone which is ideal for growing wine. The unique territory is complemented by the cool climate of the higher altitudes and moderate rainfalls. The vineyard is close to the famous Inle Lake. |
The HISTORY:
The project sponsors are Bert Morsbach and a group of European friends who shared his love for Myanmar and for wine. They also liked the challenge of these elements and to accept the risks of being pioneers in a friendly environment.
In 1998 the firs 3,000 vines were imported from Europe and were planted in Loikaw, the capital of the Kayah State. In 1999 this first vineyard was relocated to Aythaya and an additional 10, 000 vines were imported from France. The decisive research and trial period was then to start. The results are overwhelming and exceeded earlier expectations.
Today, the founders can claim that top quality wines can be produced in the Southern Shan States of Myanmar. It was a calculated risk but in hindsight it was also a hugely challenging period between the first export-quality wines in 2004. The founders owe a great deal of that success to close cooperation with the Myanmar Agriculture Service ( MAS ) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Myanmar. |
The WINEMAKERS:
From the outset the target was to grow only quality wines with high export potential. That required working with the best experts in tropical viticulture. The company retained the services of two well-known wine professional from Europe, Mr. Wolfgang Schaefer and Mr. Peter Hohnen. |
