Waso Chinlone Festival

There are many kinds of sports in respective country. Traditional, adopted, locally play game are occur in the world. The traditional sports are maintained as a symbol of the country. Now, I will introduce of our traditional sports or one green spot, its call Waso ChinLone (cane ball) festival. Waso means the months of Buddhist lent. ( 3 months duration from July to Oct). Normally can say from start of July and end of October.

What is Chin Lone? (cane ball) and how they play?
They were the thin layer of cane (rattan) to shape as a ball with the size of 5'' diameter. Cane ball can get in the whole country from down town to country side. Every body can play the Cane Ball by a teams of six our less. Officially play team is must be six. The players are stand as a cycle role shape and play the came ball to support the ball each others. The ball repeatly and though the Chin Lone to each others. There are side foot paw (Bey Phawa) straight foot paw (Tet Pha Wa), Ball over head and tough by site foot paw (Sa Lwei).The ball over shoulder and tough by knee (Gone Ban Duu), leg over ball by turning the body (wide kyi), ball over shoulder and tough with foot paw by turning the body. (Yin Lane Phawa) etc..

Chinlone is a combination of sport and dance, a team sport with no opposing team. The focus is not on winning or losing, but how beautifully one plays the game. A team of six players pass the ball back and forth with the feet and knees as they walk around the circle. One player goes into the center to solo, creating a dance of various moves strung together. These play style are to play with combination to each others and individual. Depend on kind of combination, the marks are different. Playing Chin Lone is not only for the computation, but also it is including one kind of Myanmar culture show and entertainment.

Back ground history of Chin Lone (Cane Ball)
Chin Lone have long history, as its traditional sport. The local community are play its for long times. They play the Chin Lone as sport and fun. The first noticed the Chin Lone entertainment is in 1782 Ava dynasty. The players entertain the royal family as royal sports in 1874 during the Kone Baung Dynasty. Also the Chin Lone sport is seeking role to entertain the royal family. In 1882 the Chin Lone sport became to the entertainment sport of monk furfural rite. The earliest evidence for Chin Lone is in Pyu Dynasty (1-4 AD) which one of chin Lone was unearths at Hmawza village near Pyi- Pegu Division.

Well organized the Chin Lone sport teams was established in 1925 called great buddhist team in Mandalay. Before that in 1900, the Eai Daw Ya nature Chin Lone team was played at Eai Daw Ya Pagoda Campus to entertain to the public. Later the team draw the rules and laws of the Chin Lone tournament. After that, they play tournament each group in the pagoda compus, during the waso period. Started from that time, the waso chin Lone festival is carry over up to now. The sport combine with music for entertainment.

Myanmar Chin Lone player, U Pho Thin who lived at Kyi Myin Dine, Yangon was the first demonstrator of Myanmar Chin Lone in 1911 with co-operation of HINSAN Ciruss team form France. Later in 1924 U LAW PAW who got the chance to entertain the Chin Lone arts at the British Empire shows in Landon, England. The team entertain to Japan, Hong Kong and at Bangkok, Thailand in 1959. During that time, the players from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand also Participated in this sport occasion.

In 1960, the Chin Lone team from Myanmar go to Main China for friendship sport. They visit and entertain at Beijing, Shanyan, Nan Kin, Shan Hai, Hancho, Kantong, and Kumin during that trip. The trip last 38 days in China.

Why call Waso Chin Lone festival?
Waso is one of Myanmar holidays period. In Waso (July to October) most of Myanmar Buddhist peoples are get holidays from Sabbath Days. Myanmars peoples are pay respect on Sabbath days in Waso period then others out of Waso period. Also the peoples get more holiday because most of Paddy cultivation work are finished in Waso. So, they rest in Waso. This is the tradition of Myanmar Culture which base on Buddhism. That why, they prepared the entertainment and tournament in Waso holiday period.

Now aday, Chin Lone entertainment and Chin Lone tournament are held not only in Waso, but also in the whole country. Regional demonstration of Chin Lone skill, inter State and division tournaments, entertainment at festival are occur every where. Amoung of them, the inter state and division tournament is biggest. They enjoy the Chin Lone sport about two weeks for this tournaments. But at Mandalay, there are still playing the Chin Lone during the Waso holiday period up to now.

Why we call green sport for Waso Chinlone Festival?

Playing Chin Lone is good for exercise, fun, friendship and economy. Every body can play any times, any place, and either man and woman. So we can call Chin Lone sport as green sport for our nationals. We are pride of the Chin Lone sport. Now the ASEAN nation countries add the Cane Ball ( Pite Kyaw Chin Lone ) sport as regional sport which is base on Chin Lone, to their regional tournament.
